Leonardo Da Vinci's Paintings: An Analysis From the Point of View of Da Vinci
The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous paintings in the world, and I am very proud of it. It gained most of its fame after it was stolen, then returned. It is a painting of a woman named Mona Lisa who sat very patiently still while I painted her. The artwork was commissioned by her husband. There are not many clear lines in The Mona Lisa, this is one of the things that makes it such a well known painting. When I was painting, I blurred the edges of her mouth so you can’t tell wether she is smiling or not. The colours in the painting are muted browns, olive greens, and blues, giving it a calm feel.
You can now go see the Mona Lisa at La Louvre in France. |
Virgin of the Rocks (sometimes known as Madonna on the Rocks) is my painting of a woman seated in what looks like the woods, surrounded by children she is caring for. The full title of the painting is actually ‘The Virgin with the Infant Saint John the Baptist adoring the Christ Child accompanied by an Angel’ but for a good reason, not many people know that name. The colours in the painting are similar to the Mona Lisa; muted browns, reds and olive greens, but the lines are a bit more distinct. The mood of Virgin of the Rocks is calm, even though it is a majestically sized painting (1.99 by 1.22) that took a lot of effort to make.

The Last Supper is another one of the world most famous paintings (I don’t want to seem too cocky, but I did make a lot of the world’s best paintings). I started painting The Last Supper in 1495 and finished it in 1948. I have a very bad habit of procrastinating and leaving paintings unfinished, so I am very proud of this work. The Last Supper is a majestic artwork which is 4.5 by 8.8 meters! Unlike my other paintings, the lines and colours in this painting are much more bright and distinct.
Sadly, while I was painting I did not understand the proper way to prime and paint alfresco, so my masterpiece is gradually fading away. You can go see The Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie. |
